Knitting participatory performance
Project type
Participatory performance and site-specific installation
Date
2015
Materials
Handmade wooden loom, T-Yarn (recycled t-shirts), video documentation
This participatory performance and installation invites reflection on the balance between theory and hands-on making in craft education. Located in the foyer of the Faculty of Visual and Performing Arts and Music at the University of Agder, the work invited students to sit, knit, and discuss the question: What should we be learning in a program called Arts and Crafts?
Using a handmade circular loom—a symbol of self-directed learning and resilience—the artist repurposed donated t-shirts into T-Yarn and engaged participants in a collaborative knitting process. Conversations ranged from personal stories about knitting traditions to reflections on the curriculum, creating a space for dialogue and shared experiences.
The knitted outcome remained suspended from the loom, with the remaining yarn balls below, serving as a material record of the performance and a critique of institutional priorities. Documented in video, this work bridges craft, education, and activism, positioning making as both a creative and critical act.
