This piece is part of the Ink and Paper series, which explores the relationship between trauma, materiality, and embodied practice through the act of writing. Using sumi ink on Japanese rice paper, I worked intuitively, allowing the act of writing to extend beyond the surface. Tea bags, steeped in ink, were used as tools for mark-making, introducing a tactile and layered dimension to the process.
The residual marks that transfer from the writing paper to the underlying surface—imprinted through the physical gestures of writing—serve as traces of the performance itself. Unlike the written text, these marks capture a raw, unfiltered record of the experience, revealing what words alone cannot express. They stand as tangible evidence of the emotional weight and embodied action behind the writing, forming a visual language of their own.
Rooted in the method of affective mark finding, this series focuses on the performative aspects of writing and the material traces left behind. By resignifying the act of writing as both a physical and intuitive process, this work reflects on the limitations of language and the power of marks to convey unspoken truths, offering a textured narrative of resilience and self-discovery.
